Nusantara Beat at Metropolis (2023)


The Nusantara Beat ensemble, formed in Amsterdam and consisting of musicians of Indonesian descent, draws inspiration from both traditional Southeast Asian folk music and 1960s-70s psychedelic rock. This poster was created to promote Nusantara Beat's performance at a music festival in Rotterdam in July 2023. The deity depicted—Barong Ket—is one of the most recognizable symbols of Balinese culture, with its masks playing a key role in local dance and performance traditions.

The risography technique used in the poster captures the mid-20th-century color palette and pays homage to hippie culture, as well as the zines, amateur brochures, and music album covers that emerged from it. The typography, designed specifically for this poster, draws inspiration from Javanese script with its distinctive elongated verticals.
